On Wednesday, June 18th, six dedicated members of the Minneapolis Uptown Rotary Club, along with a resident from the Beach Club residences, spent two hours making a real difference. Organized by club member Bill Sweatt, the event, playfully dubbed "Rock N' Roll Burritos with Ready Set Smile," brought together Kate Van Slyck, Adam Kooyer, Laurie Kottke, Steph Swanson, Bill Sweatt, Guy Johnson, and Dave S. to assemble hundreds of "dental burritos" for Ready Set Smile.
Ready Set Smile is a non-profit that brings crucial dental care to children who might not otherwise have access to such services. "Dental Burritos" are essential kits used by volunteer providers from Ready Set Smile during in-school visits. The kids are first educated on the importance of cleaning their teeth in a fun atmosphere--then exam time! Each burrito is intentional package: it includes a sanitary napkin wrapping seven items for the provider (8 if you include the napkin!), a small brush, a length of floss, gauze, and a small tray for the provider to utilize during an examination. For the child, there's a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss for use after their check-up.
The Rock N Roll Wrapping event, was held from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at Ready Set Smile's location (3501 Aldrich Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55408), and was a ton of fun. Bill Sweatt made sure of that, providing snacks and beverages and setting a lively mood with classic 70s rock and TV tunes from his Bose speaker, even taking requests! The atmosphere was filled with friendly chat and music trivia, turning the important task of assembling of dental kits into a genuinely enjoyable experience.
The hundreds of “dental burritos” prepared by our Rotary Club members will be distributed and used in Uptown schools, directly benefiting local children by ensuring they receive vital dental care. This collaborative effort perfectly showcases our Club's strong commitment to community service and improving the well-being of those in need.
