Jan. 07, 2016
WITH MORE THAN 400,000 SUPPORTERS, Compassion & Choices is the leading nonprofit organization working to improve care and expand choice at the end-of-life. For more than 30 years, we have increased people’s quality of life and given them added peace of mind in their final days — even when injury or illness takes their voice. We work to change attitudes, practices and policies so that everyone can access the information and options they need to have more control and comfort in their final days. We offer free consultation, planning resources, referrals and support. Across the nation, we work to protect and expand end-of-life options — and to ensure healthcare providers honor and enable patients’ decisions about their care. https://www.compassionandchoices.org

General Benefit Corp: from salsa to clean water
Jan. 21, 2016
In September of 2014 a small group of Gustavus students and a dedicated Gustavus faculty advisor came together to form an organization that was committed to exploring social entrepreneurship. We became known as the Gustavus Social Entrepreneurs and six months later the GSE, General Benefit Corporation was founded. GSE was born provide entrepreneurial experience and education to students, while at the same time benefiting society. At GSE we can see a better world. A world where everyone has access to fresh water. A world where disadvantaged children have access to summer camp experiences that can make all the difference. However, this world is similar to an unmade puzzle. The pieces are plenty, scattered, and at first glance seem impossible to assemble. We at GSE are attempting to put that puzzle together.

Birds of Minnesota State Parks
Feb. 04, 2016
From the Star Tribune... Janssen, 82, has a new book, “Birds of Minnesota State Parks,” that was almost 18 years in the making. Released last month by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the book had its start in 1997 when the DNR contacted Janssen in search of someone to “inventory” the birds at several state parks. “It took about a nanosecond to say ‘Me!’ and that started the whole project,” said Janssen, who had retired from the corporate world in 1994. He worked at Quality Park Products in Minneapolis for 38 years. Janssen set up a system for four-year bird surveys at Afton, William O’Brien, Fort Snelling and Minnesota Valley state parks. In 2001, a state parks manager suggested expanding the surveys to more parks. Janssen and birder Jerry Bonkowski did field surveys at 35 parks “with no birding information,” Janssen said, and gathered other bird data on the remaining state parks. Their work lasted until 2007. |

MPLS Parks: Calhoun-Harriet Master Plan & Improvements
Apr. 07, 2016
Deborah Bartels is the Project Manager for the Calhoun-Harriet master plan and improvements. The project is in the Planning and Design phase. Use of Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet has more than doubled in less than 20 years, posing functional and environmental risks to the lakes. The 12.5 miles of trail, built in 1997-98, are aging and in need of replacement. Shoreline erosion and untreated storm water continue to adversely affect water quality. The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) needs a master plan to guide future improvements. http://tinyurl.com/h4n88n2

Twin Cities Rotaract: North Minneapolis community involvement
May 05, 2016
Anika joined Twin Cities Rotaract in October, 2013 and became Professional Development Chair in Spring of 2014. She has 10 years work experience in nonprofits, international non-governmental organizations, and philanthropy. Walz most recently worked on civic engagement and leadership development efforts in Minnesota. Prior to this work she spent a combined four years managing holistic community led development projects in East Africa. Inspired by this work she is now working toward her Masters in Global Public Policy and Program Evaluation at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs. Walz strives to more effectively and efficiently connect the dots between idea and action for the common good and thinks Rotaract is the perfect place to do just that. When not working, studying, or volunteering she plays with her pup and pretends to be Martha Stewart in her home in Robbinsdale. |
