Last Wednesday evening, on September 10th, 2025, the Minneapolis Uptown Rotary Club held its annual Benefit for Children, bringing together more than 35 guests for an evening of community spirit, connection, and good will.

The event came together on an idilic night thanks to the dedication of many hands. Steph Swanson and Guy Johnson led the planning, while Dale Snyder arranged a delicious menu from Lund’s Catering. Guests enjoyed music selected by Bill Blackburn and a smooth program supported by Adam Kooyer on sound. The setting itself was a highlight.  Special gratitude goes to Laurie Kottke for suggesting, facilitating, and orchestrating such a beautiful outdoor space on an absolutely perfect September evening.

We also want to recognize Bill Sweatt, who was unable to attend due to an emergency. Even in his absence, he played a key role--Steph stepped up to gather and bring all of the beverages and serving equipment from Bill’s house so the evening could run smoothly. Bill was missed, but his contributions helped make the event possible.

The door prize model was also a hit, embraced enthusiastically by guests and club members alike. Twins tickets, jewelry shop coupons, soccer game passes, and even a membership to the botanical gardens made up a fun mix of prizes. Each guest received eight tickets to distribute across the eight offerings--some chose to stockpile their chances on one prize, while others spread them out to try their luck at winning them all. The laughter and excitement added another layer of energy to the evening.

During the program, President Charmaine Dwyer eloquently introduced the charities we support through this benefit:

  • Ready Set Smile

  • Joyce Uptown Food Shelf

  • Haiti Outreach

  • Ella Baker School

  • Every Meal

  • Warm Hands, Warm Heads, Warm Hearts

Thanks to the generosity and spirit of everyone involved, we not only met our goal of $14,000 but surpassed it, raising $15,000 so far. Each of these organizations will be able to continue their important work in our community and beyond. With wonderful food, warm fellowship, and a shared purpose, the evening was truly a celebration of what can happen when people come together to make a difference.
