MSP Airport Architecture
Jan. 15, 2026
Alan Howell has twenty-eight years of aviation-architecture design experience and a decade of other interesting architectural design and design experience to draw from as he assists and expands the Metropolitan Airports Commission’s Vision Statement “To provide exceptional airport experiences so Minnesota thrives.” In his role as senior airport architect of the Airport Development Department, he is responsible for the conceptualization and implementation of new facilities, major remodeled facilities, and facility redevelopment and repurposing at all of MAC’s airports, all with an interest and focus on sustainable practices, multi-department and multi-discipline coordination, and ADA/universal design. He has been responsible for the initiation, conceptualization, and delivery of roughly $1.94B of capital improvement projects and programs in partnership with his professional continuing consultants. Alan has been involved with the Transportation Research Board’ s Airport Cooperative Research Programs (ACRP), most notably chair for Report 130 Guidebook for Airport Terminal Restroom Planning and Design, panel member for Report 226 Planning and Design of Airport Terminal Restrooms and Ancillary Spaces, chair of the ACRP program that became ideaHub, and currently serving as a panel member for an ADA synthesis. He is also currently past-president of the American Institute of Architects MN Saint Paul chapter; head of the facilities committee and council member at his religious institution. For the last nineteen years, he has been one of three MAC appointed members of MSP’s Arts & Culture committee supporting the arts@msp program, continuing to be responsible for coordination of capital improvement programs supporting selection, installation, and design of permanent art and exhibit space, including the see18(msp) short film screening room and award winning restrooms with mosaics and concourse art cases. |
