Birds of Minnesota State Parks
Feb. 04, 2016
From the Star Tribune... Janssen, 82, has a new book, “Birds of Minnesota State Parks,” that was almost 18 years in the making. Released last month by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the book had its start in 1997 when the DNR contacted Janssen in search of someone to “inventory” the birds at several state parks. “It took about a nanosecond to say ‘Me!’ and that started the whole project,” said Janssen, who had retired from the corporate world in 1994. He worked at Quality Park Products in Minneapolis for 38 years. Janssen set up a system for four-year bird surveys at Afton, William O’Brien, Fort Snelling and Minnesota Valley state parks. In 2001, a state parks manager suggested expanding the surveys to more parks. Janssen and birder Jerry Bonkowski did field surveys at 35 parks “with no birding information,” Janssen said, and gathered other bird data on the remaining state parks. Their work lasted until 2007. |

MPLS Parks: Calhoun-Harriet Master Plan & Improvements
Apr. 07, 2016
Deborah Bartels is the Project Manager for the Calhoun-Harriet master plan and improvements. The project is in the Planning and Design phase. Use of Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet has more than doubled in less than 20 years, posing functional and environmental risks to the lakes. The 12.5 miles of trail, built in 1997-98, are aging and in need of replacement. Shoreline erosion and untreated storm water continue to adversely affect water quality. The Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) needs a master plan to guide future improvements. http://tinyurl.com/h4n88n2

Shema: addressing and alleviating extreme poverty and human trafficking
Aug. 04, 2016
Shema is our response to a hurting world. Our aim is addressing and alleviating extreme poverty and human-trafficking through engaging in ethical textile manufacturing and documenting the work by highlighting those involved globally through film. We chose Shema for our company name. A word meaning "hear," Shema reflects our vision to hear with our hearts and listen for a new way. We aim to plant 25 new sewing co-operatives in the next five years, employing at-risk or rescued survivors of human trafficking in Southeast Asia. |
