The Bridge for Youth
Oct. 08, 2015
The Bridge for Youth was founded in 1970 when Sister Rita Steinhagen saw a problem, cared, and responded. She noticed a growing number of unaccompanied youth on the streets of Minneapolis who were increasingly vulnerable to exploitation, prostitution, violence, and illness. Responding to the need, Sister Rita opened The Bridge in the West Bank neighborhood, one of the nation’s first refuges for runaway and homeless youth. The Bridge relocated to the East Isles neighborhood in 1975. In the decades that followed, tens of thousands of youth and their families have benefited from the innovative and comprehensive services of The Bridge. |

Small Sums’ sole purpose is to help homeless individuals, who have found jobs, with the specific things that they need to start back to work. With practical and timely assistance, that few other agencies provide, we remove obstacles that prevent homeless workers from being able to take a job. We often provide our clients assistance with things like required work clothes and shoes, trade tools, professional licenses or union dues, and bus passes so they have a reliable way to get to work everyday until they receive a paycheck. |

General Benefit Corp: from salsa to clean water
Jan. 21, 2016
In September of 2014 a small group of Gustavus students and a dedicated Gustavus faculty advisor came together to form an organization that was committed to exploring social entrepreneurship. We became known as the Gustavus Social Entrepreneurs and six months later the GSE, General Benefit Corporation was founded. GSE was born provide entrepreneurial experience and education to students, while at the same time benefiting society. At GSE we can see a better world. A world where everyone has access to fresh water. A world where disadvantaged children have access to summer camp experiences that can make all the difference. However, this world is similar to an unmade puzzle. The pieces are plenty, scattered, and at first glance seem impossible to assemble. We at GSE are attempting to put that puzzle together.

Birds of Minnesota State Parks
Feb. 04, 2016
From the Star Tribune... Janssen, 82, has a new book, “Birds of Minnesota State Parks,” that was almost 18 years in the making. Released last month by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the book had its start in 1997 when the DNR contacted Janssen in search of someone to “inventory” the birds at several state parks. “It took about a nanosecond to say ‘Me!’ and that started the whole project,” said Janssen, who had retired from the corporate world in 1994. He worked at Quality Park Products in Minneapolis for 38 years. Janssen set up a system for four-year bird surveys at Afton, William O’Brien, Fort Snelling and Minnesota Valley state parks. In 2001, a state parks manager suggested expanding the surveys to more parks. Janssen and birder Jerry Bonkowski did field surveys at 35 parks “with no birding information,” Janssen said, and gathered other bird data on the remaining state parks. Their work lasted until 2007. |
